Private Military Companies (PMCs) have existed for decades, but became much more common after the end of the Cold War in the 1990s. Throughout this period, governments increasingly began to rely on private companies for military work. They have been used in conflicts with countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Ukraine. They were known for having carried out tasks like training soldiers, protecting infrastructure, transporting supplies, and supporting military operations. While PMCs can provide valuable help to governments, some companies have also faced criticism and accusations of violating human rights, using excessive force, and avoiding legal accountability. As their role in wars continues to grow, many countries and the United Nations have advocated for stronger regulations to control them and hold them responsible for their actions.
